In 1988, historian Roger Chartier conducted five conversations with sociologist Pierre Bourdieu for France Culture. This book recently gathers those discussions, expanded with a preface by Roger Chartier that establishes their intellectual and political context. The conversations revolve around the possibilities of both disciplines as well as their roles within society. They repeatedly discuss the ensemble of illusions and confusions that prophetic intellectuals produce and that confront scholars.
