A true story from a dark time. In the year 1636, all of Germany is gripped by witch hysteria. A few years earlier, the quiet town of Rheinbach also fell victim to it—a time that no one likes to remember. Now, the Elector has summoned the witch commissioner back to the town. Hermann Löher, a merchant and the youngest councilor at the Rheinbach court, fears for his wife and children. His wife, Kunigunde, belongs to the "burned kind": members of her family were handed over to the flames back then. Löher does not believe in witchcraft or in the guilt of those who fell victim to the fire years ago. This is a dangerous attitude in these times. When the wave of arrests also affects friends, the councilor can no longer remain silent. Soon, he and his wife find themselves in a battle against forces that are far worse than what is accused of the witches.
