Product details

Hilberg, the dean of Holocaust researchers, demonstrates in his latest book through examples how he deciphers sources, brings them to life through interpretation, and places them in their historical context. In this way, a brief piece of paper—often interest-driven and obscuring the true facts in coded language (orders, directives, instructions, reports, etc.)—is transformed into a vivid document that reveals what the respective author actually intended. It is not true, as is often claimed, that documents speak for themselves; rather, they must be made to speak through appropriate questions and the application of suitable historiographical methods. For Hilberg, the sources of the Holocaust are nothing more than "normal" historical sources, even if specific peculiarities arise. It is a slim book, in which the author indeed engages in meticulous work. It is essential.
