Product details

For 1100 years, pilgrims from all over Europe have journeyed along the Camino Francés from the Pyrenees through Pamplona, Burgos, and León, and along the coastal route from San Sebastián through Bilbao, Santander, and Oviedo to the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela. Dietrich Höllhuber and Werner Schäfke follow this path and guide the reader through a treasure trove of churches and castles, fortified towns and picturesque farming villages, golden altarpieces of the Renaissance and Gothic stained glass windows, Romanesque sculptures and hyper-modern museum buildings. Highlights include the monuments of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture in and around Oviedo, Romanesque masterpieces such as the Abbey of San Isidoro in León, and above all, the main work, the cathedral above the apostle's tomb in Santiago. The authors also provide a well-informed yet easily readable insight into the cultural history of the Spanish Camino de Santiago.
