Product details
With the fascination of a psychological thriller, The Stranger – Camus' masterpiece – tells the story of an ordinary man who is unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach. With an introduction by Peter Dunwoodie; translated by Matthew Ward.
Under the pretext, Camus examines what he called "the nakedness of man in the face of the absurd" and describes the state of ruthless alienation and spiritual exhaustion that shaped so much of life in the twentieth century.
"The Stranger is a strikingly modern text, and Matthew Ward's translation will enable readers to understand why Camus' stoic anti-hero and duplicitous narrator remains one of the central expressions of a post-war Western malaise and one of the cleverest representatives of a literature of ambiguity." – from the introduction by Peter Dunwoodie.
First published in 1946; now in translation by Matthew Ward.
Albert Camus, born in Algeria in 1913, published The Stranger – now one of the most widely read novels of this century – in 1942. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. He died in a car accident on January 4, 1960.
