On the most famous day in German post-war history, the day when the underdog Germany becomes football world champion, on July 4, 1954, an eleven-year-old pastor's son in the Hessian village of Wehrda is awakened as he is every Sunday: by the sound of church bells ringing for a quarter of an hour, announcing just one message: You shall keep the holiday holy! However, on the afternoon of this Sunday, he listens to an "unheard-of service": Herbert Zimmermann's radio commentary becomes a kind of Damascus experience for the shy, stuttering eleven-year-old.
