In May 2003, internist Mechthild Bach is reported by a health insurance company. The doctor, who cares for many cancer patients in their final stages of life, is accused of sending thirteen patients to an early death with overdoses of morphine and sedatives: negligent homicide, even murder - or palliative care and indirect assisted dying for terminally ill patients? For eight years, Mechthild Bach fights against prejudgments and overzealous experts. She consistently claims to have aimed solely for pain relief for her patients. However, judges and experts also consider malice as a possible motive for her actions. In early 2011, Mechthild Bach takes her own life with an overdose of morphine after the court has taken away her last hope for acquittal and a new beginning as a doctor. Her story speaks of the failure of the justice system and of self-righteousness.
