Under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Gerhard Scharnhorst, who was still in the service of Hanover at the time and later ennobled in Prussia as a military leader and reformer, a topographic-military map of the Diocese of Hildesheim was created in 1798. This represents the earliest precise overall measurement of this ecclesiastical territory, which only received a more accurate mapping several decades later, after being taken over by Kurhannover, through the Gauss land survey. The original map, measuring 130 by 100 cm and drawn to a scale of 1:64,000, is preserved in the State Library in Berlin. With this edition, it is being reproduced for the first time in high quality and in color. The creation and significance of the work are explained in an accompanying booklet.
