The way to the other
German, François, Jullien, 2014Product details
How can one open a path to the Other? François Jullien presents two mediating concepts here: distance and the in-between. In contrast to difference, which is firmly tied to identity, distance is fruitful because it is exploratory and adventurous; it creates a tension between what it separates. Opening a distance means creating an in-between; creating an in-between is a prerequisite for fostering the Other. In this in-between, where our thought of being has never been conceived, the relationship with the Other intensifies, thus preserving them from assimilation. It is not, as one might think, starting from the similar, but by allowing distances to operate and thus making an in-between usable that an alterity unfolds, bringing forth the common. This is the Pre.
