Product details

After World War II, Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslavia experienced a period of relative calm. By around 1960, well-trained and state-subsidized Yugoslav climbers began to undertake extraordinary routes in the Himalayas. These teams were primarily made up of Slovenian mountaineers, who had an ideal training ground in their home Julian Alps with its steep limestone peaks. However, after Tito's death in 1980, the tranquility came to an end. Disputes between ethnic groups and economic decline led to the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Slovenia became independent in 1991. The new state continued to support its top climbers. By 1995, all of the eight-thousanders had been climbed by Slovenian teams. Some of the ascents carried out by these extreme and mostly unknown climbers in the West were among the most spectacular and visionary of that time. "The Way to the Summit" takes the reader into the dramatic era of Slovenian mountaineering, from the perspective of Nejc Zaplotnik, one of the country's greatest climbers and writers. His book "Pot" (The Way) was and remains a Slovenian classic: not only for climbers but also for non-mountaineers. His words and spirit form a thread that runs through the entire book, opening the door to the soul of these climbers.
