The Rider on the White Horse is much more than a classic piece of German literature. In a very limited space, it uses a ghost story to narrate the struggle of man against nature and against humanity. Hauke Haien's attempt to impose new boundaries on the sea leads to an abyss, the interpretation of which consumes the reader like the storm surge devours the newly gained land.
