It was the year of our Lord 1989. People heard about wars and uprisings, yet they were not afraid, for all of this had to happen. Thus begins the novel "The Wings" by the Romanian author Cartarescu, the finale of the "Orbitor" trilogy. The backdrop is the transformation of society during the revolution in Bucharest. Tumultuous scenes unfold in the streets, while in the apartment of the first-person narrator, the television runs day in and day out, and he immerses himself in the stories of his ancestors. This creates a kaleidoscope of fragmented consciousness - and one of the greatest, most excessive works of world literature.
