Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of the most renowned writers from Sweden, and her works are considered part of world literature. In 1909, she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 1914, she was the first woman to be inducted into the Swedish Academy. On a small farm in southern Sweden lives 14-year-old Nils Holgersson, who only brings trouble to his parents because he is lazy and mischievous. One day, as punishment for a mean prank, Nils is transformed into a gnome by a gnome. The tame gander Martin wants to join the wild geese that are passing over the Baltic Sea on their way to their breeding grounds in Lapland. Nils tries to stop the gander, but he fails because he is so small: the gander simply takes off with Nils on his back.
