The stories of cigarette smoking, tobacco, cigarette production, and advertising in Germany are thoroughly transnational: raw materials, manufacturers, knowledge, production methods, images, and consumption habits were constantly in motion in the 19th and 20th centuries. They crossed the Atlantic multiple times and repeatedly transcended the borders between countries and continents. In the German cigarette and its surrounding context, East and West Europe, the Orient and the Occident, Europe and the USA interacted. In the decade following World War II, the dominant Oriental tobaccos in Germany were replaced by the American Blend; this fundamentally changed German cigarette culture. The complex movements, transfers, and relationships surrounding the German cigarette are examined with a focus on the product, its manufacturers, and advertising, as well as in detailed studies.
