Product details
The oldest fully preserved Bible in the German language was most likely translated in Zurich around 1300-1320. These were the tumultuous years of the Battle of Morgarten, the assassination of Duke Albert of Habsburg near Brugg, and the early Confederation. The translator was probably the preacher brother Marchwart Biberli, from a Zurich patrician family and connected to the circle from which the Manesse manuscript emerged. There is no earlier fully preserved German Bible translation. It stands as a monument of the High Alemannic language of that time and is an excellent translation. Its style is fresh and original. The learned translator likely created it for religious sisters in Zurich and the regions along the High Rhine, such as Töss near Winterthur and Katharinental near Diessenhofen. These educated women desired direct access to the text.
