Thirteen rejected asylum seekers share their testimonies about their everyday lives in conversations. All of them live in a kind of regulated illegality: they have no residence permit, they are not allowed to work, and they do not receive social assistance. They lead a precarious existence in emergency aid. The focus of the portraits is not on their escape stories, but on their lives here among us: there are the two brothers who grew up in Switzerland and, in perfect Basel dialect, talk about how much they would like to go to the nearby city of Basel with friends, but are not allowed to because it is in a different canton. There is the mother of a teenage daughter who tries to maintain a normal family life for her despite extreme material hardship and is called a bad mother by her daughter because she has no money for new clothes. And there is the young man who lives in an emergency aid center.
