As in all of Germany, in March 1943, Sinti and Roma from Mannheim were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp by the Nazi authorities. The goal was the elimination of those labeled as a "foreign race." However, discrimination and persecution did not begin only during the Nazi era; they had already been marginalized and defamed earlier, facing state repression even during the Weimar Republic. The history of the Sinti and Roma during the Kurpfalz and Baden periods is also highlighted. Even after 1945, as Udo Engbring-Romang shows through primary sources, corresponding resentments can still be found in politics and administration, as well as in urban society and the media. This is evident, for example, in issues of restitution and the recognition of genocide.
