Since the arrival of the brothers of Louis XVI in Koblenz in the summer of 1791, the city became the political and organizational center of the diplomatic and military activities of the French emigrants. From that time on, the notion of being threatened by the emigrants in Paris became associated with the name of the city of Koblenz. Detached from the actual strength of the emigrant potential concentrated in Koblenz, the city became the quintessential center of emigration for both friends and foes. Koblenz became a symbol of an external counter-revolutionary threat. The name Coblentz evolved into a political term that could rhetorically brand all opponents of the revolution, and it still finds occasional use in today's political discussions. The Koblenz emigrant colony was the main gathering point for active counter-revolutionaries from June 1791 to July 1792.
