Medieval marketplaces were numerous and varied in form. They differed significantly in the Middle Ages regarding their names, construction, furnishings, uses, and functions. While some individual marketplaces have been well studied, there is a lack of recent research that examines marketplaces across different locations and themes. The various facets of medieval marketplaces in the Middle and Upper Rhine were the subject of a conference in 2016, the results of which are published in this volume. The functioning and functionalization of marketplaces in this region during the late Middle Ages are examined from an actor-centered perspective, with particular attention given to marketplaces in smaller towns.
