Confessional identities, as they developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, continue to shape European regions to this day. The formation of confessions was a fundamental process in European history and has been the subject of historiographical debates in recent decades. This volume is an art historical contribution to this discussion. The starting point of the considerations is the thesis that images not only reflect these processes but also actively shaped them. In hardly any other period was the question of religious imagery so central to conflicts. Its presence or absence in the church space was of greater significance for confessional affiliation, and the function of imagery in the processes of faith was questioned more intensely. The case studies gathered in this volume explore some lesser-known works from Wrocław, Greater Poland, and Pomerania.
