Mandatory communication in the pre-modern era is still primarily equated with rationalized postal services today. Earlier forms of information dissemination are often overlooked. This study examines how the actors of these loose institutions fit into the social and administrative structures of their cities, what significance they had in urban communication networks, and what special tasks they undertook in the context of diplomacy and war.
