From antiquity to modern times, people have repeatedly acted as founders to be remembered by future generations beyond death. This need for remembrance was intertwined in the Middle Ages with the concern for one's own soul's salvation. The author traces the transformation that occurred in the late Middle Ages, which affected the nature of foundations and the concern for life after death. He exemplarily describes the foundations of the Burgundian chancellor Rolin (1376-1462), which, thanks to their scale and longevity – the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune is still a tourist attraction today – are well-documented and provide a wealth of insights into the foundation practices of the 15th century.
