The contributions collected in this volume examine trans-Mediterranean medieval interconnections between the Holy Roman Empire and Palestine. They explore the Central European conditions for the Crusades and their repercussions on the Empire. Who participated in these endeavors, and what motives were significant for the different groups of participants? How was the recruitment for the Crusades conducted on-site? Which institutions kept the Crusading movement alive, and in what ways? What media were used in this context? And what impact did the Crusades have on the regions of origin of their participants?
