Heralds are known to a wide audience under the keywords of chivalric tournaments and coats of arms. Research has supported this image, as heralds were long reduced to their relationship with tournaments and heraldry. However, the activities of heralds exist within a much broader social context, making them emblematic representatives of noble court culture. For over two centuries, they have been a leading medium of the aristocratic society. Their social impact is systematically and comparatively placed within the social, political, and cultural frameworks for the first time here.
