Our relationship with animals is primarily one of ambivalence. We mourn the fate of Romanian street dogs and donate for the survival of the last tigers. We teach our children not to torment animals - not even insects. At the same time, in Germany, we dispose of around 50 million male "waste chicks" each year and slaughter about the same number of pigs. We build our standard of living on the lives and deaths of various animal species. But can we ethically justify this behavior? What characteristic grants a living being moral value? Does an ape have a right to life, while an infant does not? Can an animal be human property? Where do we draw the line? Animal ethics deals with these questions. The comic traces the debate about animals that began in antiquity and continues to this day.
