Product details

Martin Bossenbroek's award-winning portrayal of the Boer War (1899 - 1902) is written from the perspective of the Dutch lawyer Willem Leyds, the British war correspondent Winston Churchill, and the Boer fighter Deneys Reitz. Their diaries, letters, and reports provide an immediate insight into the events and offer precise and comprehensive information about the background, motives, course, and consequences of the conflict. Lured by rich natural resources, not least gold and diamonds, an increasing number of adventurers flock to the Boer republics of the Orange Free State and Transvaal - many of them British Uitlanders. When the Boers deny them equal rights, the government in London sends a quarter of a million soldiers to the Cape to annex the region for the Empire. The world gets a glimpse of total war: British troops carve out paths.
