Florence, just before Christmas: Guarnaccia is in a hurry to get to Sicily to be with his family, but then a murder occurs. Fraud and stolen art treasures come to light, but they are merely the backdrop to a personal tragedy. To make matters worse, a severe flu knocks the Maresciallo down, and it is uncertain whether he will catch the murderer and the last train to Syracuse.
