Integration begins with language. Only when we share our experiences with one another do we give others the opportunity to understand, accept, and like us. Therefore, when children from different cultures meet in our kindergartens and schools, our primary goal must be to encourage communication, storytelling, listening, and questioning. But it is not just stories that bring foreign cultures and life paths closer together. We can open up new spaces for experience with all our senses. Through spices, cooking recipes, images, touch, and shared play, children learn to overcome initial unfamiliarity and come to see themselves as a group and become friends.
