Content Description Smart but at a Loss - Why Knowledge Alone Does Not Save Us. We live in a time when knowledge is abundant, yet as a society, we seem more lost than ever. Never before has information been so easily accessible, and never have we had so much data, studies, and educational institutions at our disposal. And yet, populism, loneliness, mental exhaustion, and ecological destruction are on the rise. How can it be that one of the most educated generations in history is unable to act wisely? In "Smart but at a Loss," I pose a central, uncomfortable question: What is education really, and why does it fail where it is needed most? The book is a philosophical, societal, and deeply personal exploration. It guides the reader through major areas of life and society such as work, politics, philosophy, religion, family, health, technology, media, culture, and the environment. It shows that all these crises stem from a common root: our narrowed understanding of education. The thesis: I argue that we have confused education for too long with knowledge, performance, and conformity. We train people to reproduce information, operate systems, and optimize processes, but not to truly understand themselves, others, or the world. The result is a society that functions but does not know why. People who hold certificates but lack inner orientation. Systems built on efficiency that lose meaning and humanity. True education is not a process of accumulating knowledge but of human maturation. It empowers us to think instead of react, to feel instead of suppress, and to act instead of consume. It is what transforms knowledge into wisdom.
