The American artist Anthony (Tony) Conrad (1940) has been a prominent figure in the art scene for over 50 years. Celebrated as a musician, filmmaker, video, and performance artist, he achieved his breakthrough in 1966 with the experimental film "The Flicker." In addition to his film work (including "Yellow Movies"), his so-called "String Performances" (solo violin) have received significant acclaim. These performances are reminiscent of the Theatre of Eternal Music (1962-1967) and have been explored by notable authors.

This monograph therefore focuses on the approximately 70 video works created by the artist from 1977 onwards, which have not yet been scientifically examined. Following a reflection on key milestones in his artistic career (a videographic look at the artist's life), the transition from materialistic experimental film to videographic image thinking within the context of appropriation art (video as the final invitation) is discussed. The reflection on the telematic culture of the 1980s questions the interplay between (video) art and society (video as television criticism). The final chapter (video in the context of music) returns to the beginning of Tony Conrad's artistic career.
