What do Sherlock Holmes and spiritualism have in common? Conan Doyle is primarily known as the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. However, his body of work is much more extensive and varied: it includes historical novels, political pamphlets, historical studies, science fiction novels, and not least, numerous publications on spiritualism. Photography plays a central role in this and brings forth a highly peculiar imaginative world. It also allows us to take a look at the world around 1900 with all its oddities: for contemporaries, Sherlock Holmes was a real existing figure, but for his author, photographs of fairies, the deceased, and spirits testified to their existence. This book collects their photos and those of other strange beings, along with the imaginarium that surrounds them.
