Of French descent, Bourdain was the son of a Columbia Records manager and a journalist for The New York Times. After attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, he trained as a chef at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. After various positions in New York restaurants, he led the French restaurant Brasserie Les Halles there. Currently, Les Halles is run by Carlos Llaguno, Bourdain's former sous chef. However, the restaurant explicitly refers to Bourdain as the "chef at large." Since 2005, he has produced a series on American television titled Ant.
