The role of trade unions in the process of German reunification and the transformation phase starting in 1990 has been largely neglected by contemporary historical research. The IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik faced particular challenges due to the significant importance of the chemical industry in East Germany. It was essential to preserve core industrial sectors and limit job losses. This publication describes for the first time the union consolidation process within the IG Chemie, its activities in collective bargaining, and its relationship with the Treuhandanstalt. The study is complemented by an interview with Hermann Rappe, the chairman of IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik since 1982 and of the unified German chemical union until 1995. The interview was conducted by Rudolf Heim.
