The onset of a physical disability in a romantic relationship usually not only changes the daily life of the now-disabled person but also affects their partner. Through qualitative interviews, Birgit Behrisch's sociological study of knowledge provides insights into the individual and couple-related interpretation and negotiation processes of affected couples, with which they shape and cope with the shared experience of disability in the private space of their relationship. The interviewed couples address aspects of independence, support, and normalcy, and develop their own responses for their couple's daily life based on their ideas and resources.
