The black German colonial soldiers have been known as loyal Askari since the defeat in World War I. They were the bearers of colonial violence in the German colonial territories and thus the foundation of German colonial power. This book illustrates their central role in representing colonial order and its constant threat through text and image documents. From a global historical perspective, it traces both the cosmopolitan backgrounds of the colonial soldiers and the processes of appropriation and reinterpretation in Africa up to the 21st century, thereby decentralizing established perception regimes.
