Design is increasingly seen as an autonomous knowledge culture. This perspective is based on epistemological premises and also promotes strategic interests regarding the disciplinary autonomy of the field. In this context, the demarcated boundaries between design, art, and science are questioned and renegotiated under the guiding motif of a design turn. Claudia Mareis traces the interferences between design and knowledge discourses since the Design Methods Movement in the 1960s, contributing to the exploration of historical influences that shape current knowledge debates in design theory and research.
