The artistic productions of migrants have intensified in recent years - not only in literature but also in film, theater, and cabaret. Whether it's Feridun Zaimoglu, Django Asl, Serdar Somunu, or Hussi Kutluan - today's German-Turkish artists are employing new stylistic devices, modes of representation, and genres to tell stories about migration: comedy, culture-clash satire, as well as hybrid forms. Maha El Hissy approaches these playful reactions to established power structures through an analysis of the carnivalesque, i.e., ethnic and gender disguise, masking, defamation, and the profanation of sacred texts and contexts.

Maha El Hissy (Dr. phil.) studied German studies in Cairo, Bayreuth, and Munich. She is a research associate in the DFG research group 'Beginnings (in) Modernity' at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
