The book examines the inclusion of individuals in the globalized functional systems of modern society. Firstly, it addresses the performance roles in which someone takes on activities and obligations that are constitutive for a social field of action. Secondly, it analyzes the various audience roles that are available as alternatives when a person's focus of activity lies elsewhere. Through these audience roles, the individual can also intervene in the processes of the systems. Thirdly, the topic of exclusion is discussed, meaning the possibility of non-consideration and the exclusion of individuals from social systems. A central sociological question is whether, in modernity, exclusion always leads to reinclusion in another social context. The book, now in its second edition, interweaves these three strands.
