The private car has long been the object of desire and a symbol of a happy life. It was a collective love of the middle class and those aspiring to it. However, this emotional attachment is increasingly losing its strength, especially in urban areas. At least there, it has become clear: the limits of fossil-fuel-based car culture have been reached. There are simply too many cars. A shift in transportation is now on the agenda. Only those transportation options that remain customizable even under resource scarcity are sustainable for the future. Using cars instead of owning them is becoming attractive—especially in conjunction with digital platforms—while cycling is gaining popularity in cities. Mobility services are emerging from the niche and can be used flexibly and routinely thanks to real-time information. However, the prevailing legal framework still privileges private cars.
