Benedict Anderson coined the successful concept of imagined communities in connection with the emergence of national entities. The creation of a national language, a founding legend, and a culture of memory enables the constitution of a field of national time. This temporal field also corresponds to a spatial one. National formations in Europe have repeatedly been traced back to specific landscape typologies. However, due to his discursive-media approach, Anderson does not even consider landscape phenomena. Rainer Guldin exemplarily fills this theoretical gap for the German-speaking area. The focus is on processes of metaphorization, which Simon Schama also explored in his book on landscape and memory.
