Rap - for some, it embodies the subversive resistance of a marginalized underclass, while for others, it is an expression of homophobia, misogyny, and glorification of violence. What is often overlooked is that rap is primarily party music. Since the emergence of the style in the 1970s, hip-hop culture has been a highly contested terrain. Ayla Güler Saied's study empirically focuses on the biographies of rappers from various genres and situates them within the theoretical analysis of the origin stories of hip-hop in Germany and the USA. In this way, a new perspective on the phenomenon of rap is revealed, which shifts the boundaries of hegemonic discourses.
