Arabian snacks have shaped the gentrification in Berlin neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, and Friedrichshain from the very beginning. Starting from this ethnic gastronomy, Miriam Stock examines the construction of local taste landscapes. She highlights both the creative practices and locations of the migrant snack vendors as well as the dispositions of the new bourgeois consumers, who, in their pursuit of cultural hegemony, are focused on authenticity performances. Through subtle and rigorous observation of the everyday, a diagnosis of the times emerges regarding the fine mechanics of distinction in late modern capitalism.
