Words can hurt and offend. Where does this power of injury come from? While in German-speaking philosophy language is often understood as a remedy against violence, the American debate on hate speech has shown that speaking can not only threaten or prevent violence but can also be a form of violence itself. How can we explain and understand linguistic injury, exclusion, and disrespect? From the perspective of various disciplines, the contributions in this volume examine the logic, grammar, and rhetoric that govern our injurious speech.
