When an individual escapes the binary classification of gender, everyday knowledge becomes unstable. By constituting an 'Other' in contrast to the human 'Normal', individuals are excluded from the realm of the human; they are considered culturally unintelligible. Annette Raczuhn addresses a research gap in this area by examining, for the first time, the production of socially shared knowledge through the cultural representation of transsexuality in films. Through the theorems of "Wrong Body Story," voyeurism, confession practices, and passing, she highlights the societal discrepancy between scientific construction and everyday understanding.
