Fred Hildenbrandt, born in Stuttgart in 1892, made a rapid career after initial journalistic positions in Frankfurt and Braunschweig. In 1922, he was brought to Berlin by Theodor Wolff, the legendary editor of the Berliner Tageblatt, which was then the most important German newspaper. Shortly thereafter, at just under thirty years old, he became the head of the feuilleton. His editors included Alfred Kerr, Alfred Polgar, Kurt Tucholsky, and Viktor Auburtin. Writers such as Peter Suhrkamp, Gabriele Tergit, and Else Lasker-Schüler wrote for him. The ten years he spent there until his departure in 1932 were not only the most exciting years of his life. Cultural Berlin reinvented itself daily—in literature, film, painting, dance, and of course, theater—becoming a globally recognized showcase of artistic sensation.
