Product details

As the daughter of the first German ambassador after World War II, Juliana Gregor came to Bolivia in 1952 at the age of nine. The long-established German colony had a strong German nationalist sentiment, and many of its members were staunch Nazis. In the 1930s, Bolivia became a sought-after refuge for Jews persecuted by the Nazis. After the war, Nazi perpetrators followed, seeking to escape prosecution in Europe, most notably Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon," as well as Nazis like Hans Ertl, who was once a cameraman for Leni Riefenstahl. His daughter Monika is said to have shot the murderer of Che Guevara. Juliana Ströbele-Gregor encountered people from both immigrant groups. She engages with the life worlds of those who fled to the Andes for entirely different reasons and their mutual relationships.
