Product details
Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594) published his world map "ad usum navigantium" (for the use of navigators) in 1569, which will mark its 450th anniversary in 2019. In Volume VII, the author describes the conception and the path of Mercator's immortal idea to change the structure of the contemporary sea chart so that his "map of enlarged latitudes" could finally help navigators plot their true courses on the map as straight lines. The new projection method of his world map from 1569 is now referred to as the "Mercator projection.".
