Early summer 1961, just before the construction of the Berlin Wall. A pilot of the German Air Force flies his Starfighter to the inner-German border. Due to a malfunction of the newly acquired jet in the Bundeswehr, the West German pilot ejects from the aircraft at the last moment and, to his horror, finds himself behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany, caught innocently between the fronts of the Cold War. The novel "At the End of Heaven" tells the story of the confusions and deceptions the pilot faces between East and West against the significant historical backdrop of this era. Interrogated and harassed by the Stasi, separated from his wife, who soon falls into the clutches of the East German state security, he is taken to Cuba, where the two are reunited only at the height of the Cuban Crisis in 1962. The novel concludes.
