In October of the post-war year 1947, during the time of the Russian occupation, five adults and six children are found murdered on a remote farm in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria. Two children who were sleeping in their beds survive the attack. A Russian commission investigates the murder case for two days but concludes that members of the Red Army cannot be involved, despite the fact that on the evening of the murder, two uniformed individuals armed with submachine guns conducted identity checks at the farm. The Austrian criminal police are only allowed to investigate afterwards. The later discovered projectiles and casings clearly show firing characteristics of Russian submachine guns. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is structured as a "documentary novel," where facts are intertwined with the author's narrative style.
