Hans on one side, Thomas and Eric on the other, travel with high hopes by train from Berlin to Italy. However, the times are completely different, and the circumstances and motives could not be more contrasting: While Hans Mehring is to be deployed in Tuscany in 1944 as a young captain in the Wehrmacht for anti-partisan operations, Thomas and Eric want to fulfill their shared Italian dream 50 years later by buying a holiday home. When they learn that their house was a partisan hideout during the last year of the war, they begin to take a closer interest in the recent past of their chosen homeland. Gradually, they shed light on the events of June 1944, when just a few kilometers from their home, the Germans committed a massacre against which Captain Mehring was forced to make a decision.
